Fans of classic fantasy comics, rejoice! Zetari, the fearless and seductive warrior is making
her long-awaited English-language debut in a stunning new deluxe hardcover edition —
now live on Kickstarter.
This 136-page special edition collects both original Zetari stories —The Monastery of
Dreams and The Bright Face of Death — fully restored with sharper, cleaner, and more
vibrant artwork than ever before. Originally created by Martin Lodewijk and legendary
British comics artist John M. Burns in the 1980s, this release marks the first time these
stories have been available in English.
Published by Oak Tree Books, and licensed from SAF Comics, this limited-edition
hardcover includes:
● Restored artwork from the highest-quality original sources — restored by
Robert Hammond (Robin of Sherwood, The Tomorrow People, Stingray,
Terrahawks).
● Newly translated English script from Lodewijk’s original text
● Never before seen comic panels, censored in the original release.
● Exclusive sketches & illustrations from Burns’ personal archives
● A foreword by David A. Roach (2000 AD, Batman, Star Wars) and an
afterword by Paul Duncan — (Taschen author, and official biographer of John
M. Burns).
“I’ve been asked many times if Zetari has ever been released in the English language and
the answer has always been a regretful ‘no’. So, I’m very pleased that Oak Tree is publishing
this (very) special edition of the two 40-year-old graphic novels in one deluxe hardback…
These stories show a master illustrator at the top of his game and will hopefully spark
demand for further collections of [John M. Burns’] work.” – Colin Brown (writer, editor, and
moderator of the John M. Burns Art Facebook group).
“This isn’t the first time I’ve had the honour of restoring and remastering the work of John M
Burns – I put together The Tomorrow People comic strip anthologies for Chinbeard Books
and Oak Tree a couple of years ago. This time the honour is doubled, with it also being the
first English-language release for Zetari. Working with someone of Colin Brown’s expertise
and pedigree on this, fans can rest assured that real love and attention is being lavished on
this project.” Robert Hammond (graphic designer and restoration expert).
Backers of the Kickstarter campaign can choose from exclusive rewards, including vintage
prints of Zetari (one of which is signed by the artist) and a special black & white
‘bookazine’ featuring an alternate version of the second story — meticulously redrawn by
Burns himself in ink and pencil.
The Kickstarter campaign is now live, with the hardcover edition available at a special
early backer price of £35 (RRP £45).
