The Rex Delicatessen, which opened earlier in January this year, is expanding its offering with the introduction of a classic bistro menu.
Situated at 38 Bruton Place, The Rex Delicatessen is housed inside a Grade II listed former Victorian stable around the corner from Mayfair’s Berkeley Square. Tucked away down a quiet street, the space has been meticulously preserved and restored by chef Larry Jayasekara, also at the helm of sister project The Cocochine.
The interior has been created by The Calshot Group, a restoration yard based at James’s Wharf in Southampton. Retaining the original tiling, repurposing stable partitions and thrifting tethering posts, The Calshot Group has reworked the characteristic features of the centuries old stable with historic sensitivity and a commitment to artistry and craftsmanship.
The bistro menu features elevated British classics such as Shepherds Pie and Grilled Lamb Chops, with sides including Miso Glazed Potatoes and the colourful Gardens Salad with House Dressing. With an expanded drinks menu available, guests will be able to enjoy a wide range of wines by the glass together with Tosi Gorgonzola and Apple Chutney. Ingredients are sourced from a select list of fishers and artisan producers, with The Rex Deli enjoying exclusive access to regenerative mixed farmland from the Rowler Estate in Northamptonshire and the seas surrounding Tanera Mòr in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides.
The all-day menu will give flexibility to patrons who can stop by for seated lunch and dinner, as well as enjoying the pre-existing coffees, snacks, and take home options. In the evenings, the space can be reserved for private gatherings, with wine and small plates available as featured in the new bistro menu.
Chef Larry Jayasekara explains: “We want The Rex Deli to be a place that meets the needs of both the Mayfair residents and those who work in and visit the area. At The Cocochine, we offer à la carte fine dining, whereas The Rex Deli has focused on deli items until now. It’s great to be able to round out the offering of Bruton Place with a bistro menu that is casual but exquisite, fully expressing our ethos and commitment to exceptional ingredients.”
From this week, the Rex Delicatessen hampers will also be available to order. Filled with products from the Rowler Estate, including blackberry jam, rosemary and garlic oil, honey and truffle butter, they will include gourmet treats by Larry Jayasekara and the team, such as miso caramel cookies, mince pies, and Aubin’s Pain d épices, for a proper festive feast. Champagne and Caviar can be added as extras for a premium package.
