20% of children lose interest in toys within 11 hours

Christmas is about getting together as a family, eating lots of good food and watching festive television. But for parents up and down the country, the lead up to Christmas can leave them wondering they should really buy their children for the big day.

It’s estimated that 1 in 5 children (20%) get bored of a new “must-have” toy in less than 11 hours, and 8% abandon them in under an hour.

Toy expert Sid Patel from Electric Ride On Cars has provided an expert comment explaining how to avoid buying a toy that’ll be abandoned by January. Sid said

“Parents always want to make Christmas a special time of year for their children and ensure that there are lots of exciting presents under the tree. But choosing the best options both play wise and cost wise is incredibly important. Here are my 5 top tips for choosing the best toys this year:

  1. Look for toys that provide open-ended play

Select toys that encourage children to create, solve problems and explore their imagination rather than simply watch. Construction sets, role-play toys, outdoor equipment and games often have a lasting impact because they can be enjoyed as the child grows.

  1. Weigh up whether it’s just trending or if it will have a lasting appeal

It’s not uncommon for parents to buy a popular, trending toy that their child desperately wants, even if it may be forgotten about within a few weeks. Try balancing one or two novelty items with toys that encourage creativity, social interaction or movement.

  1. Try not to fall for the hype

A toy that is dominating social media or frequently occurring on Christmas gift guides might not be the right option for your chid long term. Buying trending toys isn’t necessarily a problem within itself, but relying on trends alone could leave you with a toy room full of toys that aren’t being played with anymore.

Children’s interests change quickly so make a note of what they are taking an interest in when searching for toys and games.

  1. Speak to other parents

Before braving the shops, ask fellow parents for their honest opinions. Getting their thoughts and opinions from what their children have been playing with and holding their attention can help guide you on making informed decisions.

  1. Consider value for money

An expensive, trending toy offers poor value for money if it does get discarded after Christmas. Toys that encourage repeated activity, social or imaginative play can provide months or even years of enjoyment and playtime, making them more likely to earn their keep.”
